The changing colors in the vineyard are more than just a beautiful sign of fall. They’re part of an incredible natural process happening within the vines!
As temperatures cool and daylight hours grow shorter, grapevines begin preparing for their winter dormancy.
🍇 What’s happening inside the vines? With harvest behind us, the vines are transitioning from growing grapes to conserving energy. They store carbohydrates in their trunks and roots, helping them survive winter and fuel new growth in the spring.
🍁 What happens next? Eventually, the leaves will fall, and the vines will enter dormancy. Although they may look lifeless during the colder months, they’re very much alive, waiting for warmer temperatures to begin the growing cycle all over again.
It’s one of our favorite reminders that great wine begins long before the grapes are harvested. Every season plays an important role in the vineyard.
Next time you see those gorgeous golden leaves, remember there’s a whole lot of science happening behind the scenes!
